It turns out when you’re a star, score goals and play for the LA Galaxy, you can win MLS Player of the Week multiple weeks in a row, no problem.
Chicharito learned that on Monday after he was voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 2 of the 2021 season, his second consecutive honor. This time around, it came after he scored a hat trick in LA’s 3-2 win over the New York Red Bulls on Sunday.
Chicharito has five goals so far in two games on the young season, so it’s safe to say he’s started the campaign on a roll. And his goals have been needed, coming in consecutive 3-2 wins, so no garbage-time scores to pad his stats.
The Mexican is the first Galaxy player to score a hat trick since Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Sept. 15, 2019. He’s also the first MLS player to win MLS Player of the Week in consecutive weeks since his compatriot Carlos Vela did it in the final two weeks of the 2019 season.
Congrats to Chicha and right now he’s on pace to score 85 goals this season. Wouldn’t that be something? Even so, here’s hoping the vein of form continues.
