Cristian Pavon, Gordon Wild score in LA Galaxy tune-up scrimmage

The LA Galaxy held a televised split-squad scrimmage between the first team and LA Galaxy II squad Thursday at Dignity Health Sports Park, and Team Gray defeated Team Blue 2-0 in a 60-minute game.

The game was preparation for the teams ahead of the MLS squad traveling to the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando next week.

These were the lineups for the game:

In the 11th minute, a penalty was called (by referee Dom Kinnear), and Gray took the lead with Gordon Wild burying the spot kick past David Bingham. Joe Corona had his arm pulled in the box on a buildup and the PK was called.

Just before halftime, Chicharito picked up a knock on a foul by Giancarlo Gonzalez and stepped gingerly until the break. He then limped off at the break, hopefully the injury isn’t a concern.

Augustine Williams replaced Chicharito for the second half for Blue.

A few minutes after halftime, Ethan Zubak had a shot for Blue that clanged off the post. Another shot, in the 47th minute, by Nick DePuy with a header off a corner, again clanged off the post for Blue.

If Gray had the edge in the first half, Blue came on in the second half. With in being a mixed-squad game, it was mostly an opportunity for reps and minutes for fitness.

Then Cristian Pavon scored an insurance goal for Gray in the 59th minute, with an audacious tip and volley off a cross to make it 2-0.

The standouts, in my mind, were Wild and Zubak in terms of workrate, both attackers staying busy up top for their respective teams throughout. Julian Araujo looked good in the first half for Blue with his two-way game. I think Pavon was very quiet the first 40 minutes but he really came on in the final 20 as the other players got tired, and his goal was world-class.

The Galaxy first team is scheduled to head to Orlando for the MLS is Back Tournament on Monday, their first game there July 13. The LA Galaxy II squad will stay home to prepare for the start of their season, which begins July 11.
