A LA Galaxy team missing star power meekly fell to the Portland Timbers 1-0 Friday night at Providence Park, knocking the Blue White and Gold out of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup.
Bradford Jamieson IV earned a start in a central attacking role, but a Galaxy attack lacking an identity struggled to make an impact. It was the Timbers who threatened to run away with the match early if not for a goal-line clearance from David Romney and a brilliant David Bingham stop.
Eventually Portland broke through in the 30th minute as Sebastian Blanco accepted a clever flick-on from Fanendo Adi inside the box and struck a low finish past a helpless Bingham with ease as the keeper gestured at his back line in frustration.
Sigi Schmid’s side started to wake up right before the interval, and Dave Romney was unlucky not to tie the match when his far post header beat Jeff Attinella but center back Larrys Mabiala re-directed the ball off the line and over the bar.
Dishearteningly Ola Kamara pulled up with an unknown injury and had to be subbed out of the match in the 57th minute, while Emmanuel Boateng also suffered a setback requiring a change.
Ariel Lassiter had a chance late to level the match but it wasn’t to be as LA’s run in the Open Cup has ended.
