The US Men’s National Team had been dominating Costa Rica for a majority of the match in Dallas, Texas. It was only a matter of time before they broke through, and they did, twice, securing a 2-0 win, with goals coming from Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey.

Kelyn Acosta should have put the USMNT ahead in the 70th minute. He made a late run into the box, and Clint Dempsey found him with an accurate pass. Acosta shot first-time, but straight at the Costa Rican goalkeeper, Patrick Pemberton.

There was finally a breakthrough, two minutes after the Acosta chance, and it was set up by Dempsey once more. Dempsey, who had only been on the field for six minutes, brought life into the USA attack. He threaded another inch-perfect pass, this time to Altidore. The Toronto FC striker made no mistake with his finish, beating the helpless Pemberton.

Ten minutes later, it was Dempsey’s turn to get on the score sheet. He stood over the ball on a free kick, bent it the long way around the wall, and got it past Pemberton at the near post. This goal brought him level with former LA Galaxy great, Landon Donovan, for the USMNT all-time goal scoring list.

The USA will play the winner of Mexico and Jamaica on Wednesday, July 26th, at Levi’s Stadium.
