LA Galaxy trade Jose Villarreal rights to Orlando City SC

LA acquire 2019 SuperDraft third-round pick in exchange

MLS: Los Angeles Galaxy at San Jose Earthquakes Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

It had to happen eventually.

After a number of frustrating seasons where nagging injuries and a lack of opportunities prevented Jose Villarreal from cracking the starting lineup, the attacker has been shipped to Orlando City SC, with LA acquiring a 2019 SuperDraft third-round pick (a.k.a. a bag of peanuts) in exchange for his rights.

The Galaxy declined Villarreal’s contract option on Nov. 27 following the conclusion of their 2017 campaign. Villarreal joined the Galaxy in 2012 and remained with the club for six seasons, making 68 appearances while tallying five goals and nine assists.

Transaction: LA Galaxy acquire third-round pick in 2019 MLS SuperDraft from Orlando City SC in exchange for the rights to forward Jose Villarreal.

It’s a sad ending for the promising, skillful talent who has gained somewhat of a cult following among Galaxy die-hards and MLS fans alike.

Hopefully Villarreal will see more time under Jason Kreis in Orlando. Good luck Jose!
