As anticipated, the Galaxy officially signed defender Rolf Feltscher to the club on a free transfer from Championship side Cardiff City. The 27-year-old Venezuelan international with 19 caps will take-up an International roster spot.

“Rolf is a talented outside back who has had success playing in top leagues in Europe and for the Venezuelan national team,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach Sigi Schmid. “We think highly of his soccer pedigree, his versatility and the skills he brings to our team. He will be another piece in building our backline. We are excited he is joining the LA Galaxy team.”

Throughout his career, Feltscher has made nearly 200 professional appearances for various clubs throughout Europe, including competition in La Liga (Spain), Serie A (Italy), 2. Bundesliga (Germany) and the Championship (England) in addition to collecting 19 caps with the Venezuelan national team. He joins the Galaxy from Cardiff City of the Championship league.

Born in Switzerland, Feltscher possesses dual citizenship with Venezuela and has made 19 appearances internationally, making his debut in 2011 at the age of 21. Since then, the defender has become a regular selection in the national team, he most recently helped his country in CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup Qualifying action, featuring in the team’s matches in August and September this year. He also featured for Venezuela during their 2016 Copa American Centenario campaign.

Admittedly the Galaxy rescued the right back from a miserable short-term spell at Cardiff City where he failed to make a single appearance under Neil Warnock. However, he does have international pedigree and did feature in last summer’s Copa Centenario, so Kurt Schmid and company should have some idea what they’re getting into.

The LA Galaxy open the 2018 season Sunday 7 p.m. March 4th at the StubHub Center vs. Diego Valeri and the Portland Timbers.
