A Univision article out today speculates that Panamanian international goalkeeper Jaime Penedo could potentially return to the LA Galaxy in 2016.
Citing a LA Times piece that confirms vague interest from both sides, the move is a welcome possibility for a team in need of a starting keeper after LA declined to exercise the option for 38-year old Donovan Ricketts.
Penedo was released by the Galaxy in July after demanding a contract extension, a decision he now regrets. Both Eddie Rock, Penedo's agent, and Arena both said last week they would be open to renewing their relationship.
Penedo, who was making $178,125 this season, wouldn't be significantly cheaper than what the Galaxy paid Ricketts in 2015, but would be an instant upgrade at the position and fill the Galaxy's one glaring weakness heading into next season.
I have to admit I feel conflicted about the idea of a Penedo reunion. On the one hand, the LA Galaxy is a class organization, and I genuinely believe Penedo left the club on good terms. And yet, how much trust can you place in a player who chooses to leave a club mid-season after receiving a pay raise? Suffice to say, were he to re-join the club I'm pretty sure Penedo would never be allowed to complain ever again.
For what it's worth, this is how Bruce described Penedo personally when the trade was announced.
"He's a good person. We wish him the best. I think it's fair to say that Jaime feels this move is good for his family.
What say you Galaxy fans? Is there a chance Penedo comes back to the Galaxy?
