According to a tweet by Taylor Twellman, the LA Galaxy will announce this afternoon that Landon Donovan will reitre at the end of the 2014 season. With the Galaxy calling a press conference the day after the MLS transfer window died, many were speculating about the player Bruce Arena was bring in. The story turned quickly toward it being about a current player, and from there we got this.
Big announcement doesn't mean new player for @LAGalaxy. Looks like @landondonovan retiring at end of 2014 @MLS season. #BreakingNews

Donovan has struggled to find his passion for the game, taking a sabbatical at the beginning of the 2013 season. He found himself on the outside looking in when the United States left him of the 23 man World Cup roster.
Still, last season the LA Galaxy announced a long term deal at a great salary increase for Donovan last season. What changed so drastically in a year that he chose to retire from both club and presumably country?
Update: Donovan has taken to Facebook to announce his retirement.
