LA Galaxy II defeat Fresno Fuego in first match

LA Galaxy II won their first ever match on Feb. 13 against Fresno Fuego, 2-1. Raul Mendiola and Travis Bowen scored for LA Galaxy II in the win.

USA TODAY Sports

The first ever match for LA Galaxy II resulted in the first win for the squad. The Galaxy's USL PRO side defeated the Fresno Fuego of the PDL 2-1 on Feb. 13 in a preseason match.

The Fuego hosted Galaxy II at Chukchansi Park and went down a goal in the 11th minute when Travis Bowen (brother of former Galaxy Homegrown signing Tristan Bowen) scored off a turnover by the Fuego keeper. The Galaxy II lead was doubled 11 minutes later when Oscar Sorto and Jack McBean assisted on Raul Mendiola's goal. The only goal conceded by the Galaxy II was near the end of first half on a set piece. Galaxy II goalie Cody Laurendi made five saves in the match.

In total, four Galaxy Academy players suited up for Galaxy II: Jamie Villarreal, Adonis Amaya, Elijah Martin and Villarreal.

Galaxy II will have a big step up in challenge level in their next effort on Feb. 22: the "White vs. Blue game" against the Galaxy's MLS side at StubHub Center.

Overall, a win in the first match together for some players who haven't spent that much time together is a great thing. The win isn't as crucial as the experience of the extra matches Galaxy II will provide. I'm very interested to see which players from Galaxy II leave their mark against the big club next Saturday.
