The MLS All Stars defeated Chelsea 3-2 at PPL Park in Philadelphia Wednesday night, with John Terry and Frank Lampard scoring for the European Champions. MLS got goals from Chis Wondolowski, Eddie Johnson, and Chris Pontius a fine selection of the scorers MLS has available.
The MLS All Stars got the game winner in the 91' from Eddie Johnson taking a shot outside the box. Kyle Beckerman sent up the pass from the halfway line that Johnson was able to flick off a defender and past Chelsea's keeper. MLS had equalized some twenty minutes earlier, just before Beckham left the match, on a play Beckham began.
David Beckham finished with the higher match impact rating of the two, 61.42 in just about seventy minutes of play. He would have had an assist were this an MLS match, sending the pass from behind the halfway line up to Dwayne DeRosario in the penalty area that led to the equalizer. That was just one of 55 successful passes for Beckham, who also had near assists on a Thierry Henry shot that went over the crossbar and a chip to Chris Pontius.
Landon Donovan's night was more pedestrian. He did complete 29 passes, just about all of them on the left wing going in, but none of them led to shot attempts. He didn't take a shot and finished with a Match Impact Rating of 40, not hurting the team at all but not creating any of the chances. Update: Upon further review, Landon Donovan's pass from the middle to Thierry Henry at the top left corner of the penalty area led to Chris Wondolowki's opening goal. Henry was robbed of the assist when John Terry got a boot on Wondolowski's initial attempt.
