LA Galaxy officially open Victoria Block

Jona says hello to Memo!

The LA Galaxy held their Victoria Block Party on Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park and from all accounts it was an enjoyable evening.

Probably the viral moment comes here, when Jonathan dos Santos gives a shoutout to “Memo”:

If you’re not familiar with the inside joke here, a few weeks ago dos Santos did a video with a fan in front of the stadium, and the fan tried to be sneaky, asking for a shoutout to Memo and when Jona asked who Memo was, the fan admitted he was, in fact Memo.

Looks like the original disappeared but here’s the original and Jona goofing with Memo Ochoa with the bit, too.

Watching Jona and Chicharito bust out laughing at the party on Saturday is hilarious.

More news for your Monday:

  • Preseason game (and stream, sort of) today: After the super-secret first scrimmage of the preseason, the Galaxy have announced they’re streaming Monday’s preseason clash against the New England Revolution, at 11 am, BUT it will be geoblocked in the Los Angeles viewing area, according to the club. Maybe they’ll show it on Spectrum Sportsnet?
  • Hayward appointment official: After reports surfaced that Phil Hayward had taken a job with the Galaxy and photos emerged of him in LA gear, the club confirmed on Friday he has indeed been hired, as director of performance and sports science. You can read more here.
  • Wild spotted on trial: One player at the open training on Saturday spotted was identified by Corner of the Galaxy as Gordon Wild. The German was drafted by Atlanta United out of Maryland in 2018, and moved to D.C. United during last season, but he’s yet to make an MLS appearance, instead toiling in the USL Championship. If I were to project, if the Galaxy do sign him, I’d expect it to be a deal for Los Dos, but we’ll see.
  • U.S., Canada qualify for 2020 Olympics: DHSP was busy over the weekend, because sandwiched between Saturday’s Galaxy event was the semifinals and final of Concacaf Women’s Olympic qualifying. Canada narrowly defeated Costa Rica, and the U.S. thrashed Mexico to book their spots to the Tokyo games this summer, while the USWNT beat Canada Sunday in the (somewhat irrelevant) final of the qualifying tournament, 3-0. In the meantime, the U.S. will host the latest “SheBelieves” tournament, and oh yeah, the NWSL season will start, once again without any team in California.

Today’s question: Did you go to Victoria Block party? A highlight for you? Let’s chat about that in the comments below!
