Will Steven Gerrard Be the Brett Favre of the Premier League?

Will the Anfield legend be tempted to return to Liverpool for more than just training?

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

A legend hangs up his cleats and rides off into the sunset. His position at the club and in the league cemented as one of the all-time greats. But then rumors start to fly that he might be seeking a return. Are we talking about Brett Favre? No, this time its Steven Gerrard.

For the second time in as many months, reports/rumors indicate that Jurgen Klopp is making a push for Gerrard to return to Liverpool. Dismissed the first time as someone looking for website traffic, the rumor won't seem to go away. While the capacity at which he would return is never nailed down in the reports (Merely to train with the club? Return as a player? Be a club advisor? Join the coaching staff?), it's becoming clear that Klopp is interested in having him back.

What could be motivating Gerrard to return? Besides the interest in Klopp, it seems that MLS was not everything he bargained for. In another article from the Independent, it appears that Gerrard was not expecting the travel schedule to be so great and to be away from his family so much. Regardless of the specific reasons, the rumors still remain and seem to be gaining steam.

There are similarities between Favre and Gerrard. Favre proved in his return to the NFL that he still had something to offer a team (taking the Vikings within a few plays of the Super Bowl). Gerrard seems to believe that he can still hang in the Premier League.

But not everything is identical between the two situations. Favre ultimately was not wanted by the Packers. If the reports are true, Klopp and Liverpool seem to be wooing Gerrard back. Maybe Gerrard doesn't have the legs anymore to be a consistent box-to-box player for Liverpool. There's only one way to find out.

Where Do We Go From Here?

So what are the LA Galaxy and fans to do with this latest news? Write it off as merely another rumor on a slow news day? Should we just view it as Gerrard wanting to be in top shape when the Galaxy return to CCL action in the Spring? Or is Gerrard poised for a return?

Let us know in the comments what you think will happen next in this saga. It seems doubtful at this point, but stranger things have happened.
