The MLS players association have released the 2013 salary information, and Juninho is the Galaxy's top non-DP earner. Designated players Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan are atop the list. This analysis and more follows.
When discussing MLS player salaries, a great deal of categorization is necessary. Designated player salaries have to be in one section with the Galaxy's two DPs guaranteed $4,333,333.33 (Robbie Keane) and $2,500,000 (Landon Donovan). Keane has 333,333.33 in guaranteed bonuses on top of his base salary of $4,000,000 (33.3% of one million) while Donovan doesn't have any guaranteed bonuses. Their salaries count as $368,750 against the salary budget.
The next category are the Homegrown players, who don't count against the salary budget. For the most part, Homegrown players are paid the league minimum, which two exceptions who can be given Generation adidas style contracts which don't count against the budget. The current minimum for players in roster spots 1-24 is $46,500.
Jack McBean and Gyasi Zardes are the two Galaxy Homegrown players paid above the minimum. Zardes is well paid (by MLS standards) at $173,000 guaranteed and McBean comes in at $101,000. The Zardes contract includes $73,000 in guaranteed bonuses, which could be a signing bonus that will see his guaranteed salary come down next year. Oscar Sorto and Jose Villareal make the minimum.
Roster spots are determined by salary and age, so let's start breaking it down. The other players making the 1-24 minimum are recent draft additions Kenney Walker, Brian Rowe, Hector Jimenez, Bryan Gual, and Rafael Garcia. The academy additions have guaranteed bonuses tied to their minimum base salary. The three LA Galaxy 2013 draft picks are making the 25-30 minimum.
Chandler Hoffman is still a Generation adidas player. I put the off-budget Generation adidas contracts in their salary order with a GA tag, Designated Players are marked with DP. The total salary budget is $2,950,000, but with the way allocation money works doing any kind of comparison math is silly (by my math, Galaxy under budget at $2,880,054). Players 1-20 are the salary budget players
