Speaking before the body of players, staff and supporters assembled in downtown Chicago, MLS Commissioner Don Garber spoke briefly about the American soccer legend, who as we all know tragically passed away after a long and successful career coaching at UCLA as well as managing the LA Galaxy, Seattle Sounders and Columbus Crew.
Garber concluded his remarks by announcing that going forward, the annual award bestowed to the top boss in Major League Soccer shall be renamed the Sigi Schmid MLS Coach of the Yeard award. It’s a well-deserved honor that rightfully enshrines Sigi as one of the forefathers of American soccer.
I for one am looking forward to Guillermo Barros Schelotto winning the award this year.
Honoring a legend of the game.
