LA Galaxy slip in Week 23 MLS Power Rankings

(Not a Steven Gerrard reference)

MLS: Los Angeles Galaxy at Colorado Rapids Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Sooner or later the unbeaten streak was going to end, and it came Saturday night at a sold out Dick’s Sporting Goods Park as the LA Galaxy rued defensive miscues in a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids. The MLS Power Rankings politburo took notice, and docked LA a spot this week.

Though the loss was disappointing, its important to place the result in the proper context. If you’re going to drop points, do it on the road with a rotated lineup. Additionally Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Giovani dos Santos as well as Michael Ciani gained some valuable rest as LA prepare for the final stretch of games to round out the season.

That being said, both goals should never have been conceded in the first place. Sigi has some work to do fixing a back four that continues to leak goals.

The Galaxy, sans Zlatan Ibrahimovic, got a dose of that Colorado altitude with the last-minute road loss. The result exposed LA’s shaky defense, but a home game against Minnesota with Zlatan back should give them a chance to bounce right back.
