Gyasi Zardes Named MLS Player of the Week

The LA Galaxy Homegrown player earned his first-ever player of the week honors in a drubbing of the Philadelphia Union

LA Galaxy's Gyasi Zardes has been named Major League Soccer's Player of the Week. The homegrown striker and rising US National Team star chalked up a goal and two assists in the Galaxy's 5-1 win over Philadelphia and captured his first-ever POTW honors.

Gyasi is now the second LA Galaxy player to win Player of the Week honors this season, after goalkeeper Jaime Penedo.

Gyasi's performance against Philadelphia was perhaps his most complete in a Galaxy uniform. He was effective on the ball and showed surprisingly sharp vision and anticipation, slotting pinpoint through balls and making proactive runs. His work earned him direct credit for 60% of the Galaxy's goals on Saturday, which is very impressive.

His goal, a volley coming at the end of a nearly full-field run, marked his fourth this season and he's now tied at the top of the Galaxy's goal-scoring chart.

In addition to scoring a goal of his own, his two other direct contributions came in the form of assists on Juninho's 35th-minute goal and Sebastian Lletget's 65th-minute strike. He also put a shot off the post which fell at the feet of Baggio Husidic, who slotted it home to open the scoring. So it's almost like he had three assists.
