Landon Donovan and Omar Gonzalez both signed new contracts last year keeping them members of the LA Galaxy for a few more years. With the MLS Players Association releasing player salaries for 2014 today, we now know that Donovan's new contract pulls him level with Robbie Keane taking home around four and a half million per season.
That puts Donovan and Keane at the levels that David Beckham and Keane were at in 2012 when the club won their second straight MLS title. Omar Gonzalez is now the lower end DP, taking home over a million yet still about half what Donovan was making in 2012. So both players got raises in Beckham's absence, but the Galaxy have cut DP salary over two years.
Juninho and Stefan Ishizaki are the players approaching the maximum, and check out Gyasi Zardes with a huge jump in guaranteed salary.
The new homegrown players are the only ones at the league minimum, though there are eight players who will likely spend more time with LA Galaxy II than the senior squad making the senior minimum.
As always these salaries are for discussion purposes only. Any attempt at armchair capology is fairly futile, especially with allocation a great unknown in MLS. However, with Arena in charge of both acquisition and the weekly lineup, it's always interesting to browse the chart. Arena's never been shy about giving the guys toward the bottom a chance, but now with LA Galaxy II, we'll probably see a clearer division between top and bottom.
