The LA Galaxy announced Wednesday they have signed Yony Gonzalez on loan from Portuguese club Benfica using Targeted Allocation Money.

The 26-year-old has not yet played for Benfica, where he signed in January, and had been on loan at Brazilian club Corinthians before the loan to the Galaxy. Previously, the Colombian has played in Brazil for Fluminense, and in his native country for Junior and Envigado.

A winger, Gonzalez has shown a knack for scoring from a wide position, something LA could very much use.

“Yony is a dynamic playmaker who we believe can strengthen our attack this year,” said general manager Dennis te Kloese in a team statement. “He possesses a diverse skillset and will be an important addition to our roster. We look forward to welcoming Yony to Los Angeles and his contributions to our club this year.”

One thing to note is that according to Corner of the Galaxy, Gonzalez is not yet in the United States, and due to general immigration red tape and the coronavirus crisis, it’s unclear exactly when he’ll arrive and be available to begin playing. It seems safe to say he won’t be available for Saturday’s game against LAFC, but we’ll see.

For now, there’s a new signing, and according to rumblings, more on the way. Stay tuned.
