Along with Atlanta United, the LA Galaxy currently have four Designated Players on the roster. And though LA and ATL are two of the powerhouse franchises in MLS, it is unlikely the league will come up a new rule to bail them out.
One’s gotta go. Right now all the fingers are pointing in the direction of Giovani dos Santos, but buying out his contract would be expensive and selling Gio to a Liga MX club isn’t going to be easy. Additionally Romain Alessandrini continues to be linked to the Montreal Impact.
This morning ExtraTime Radio spoke exclusively with LA Galaxy GM Dennis te Kloese about the DP logjam and how he plans to fix the issue. Listen here.
As you might expect Kloese was tight lipped, noting Schelotto would like to assess his own needs and conduct player meetings before moving forward. A few interesting tidbits emerged however.
-When pressed about Giovani dos Santos, te Kloese distanced himself from praising the Designated Player. Some have suggested te Kloese could get dos Santos going again as a de facto Gio whisperer, but that hope seems to have dwindled.
-Speaking of DPs, te Kloese also revealed there is interest in several of the Galaxy’s highest paid players. Since yesterday reports have come out suggesting Gio has suitors from Mexico and abroad.
