Following a short retreat to Santa Barbara which concluded with Sigi Schmid’s squad defeating Fresno Football Club 3-1 on the UCSB campus, the blue white and gold will take on their heated rivals Saturday afternoon at Orange County Great Park in Irvine. (2 PT, live stream at LAGalaxy.com)
Reminder: The friendly is a event for season ticket holders only, so don’t expect to show up at the stadium and wing it.
2018 roster changes:
Out: Bradley Diallo, Clement Diop, Rafael Garcia, Jermaine Jones, Jon Kempin, Jack McBean, Jack McInerney, Raul Mendiola, Robbie Rogers, Brian Rowe, Nathan Smith, Pele Van Anholt, Jose Villarreal, Jamie Villarreal, Gyasi Zardes
In: David Bingham, Servando Carrasco, Rolf Feltscher, Tomas Hilliard-Arce, Ola Kamara, Perry Kitchen, Emrah Klimenta, Chris Pontius, Jorgen Skjelvik, Brian Sylvestre
Trialists: Cordell Cato, Julian Buescher
What to watch:
With LA’s opener vs. the Timbers two weeks away, Sigi Schmid anticipates giving more minutes to the starters on Saturday.
“That’s something that we’re still talking about. We’ll probably play a little more of the guys who played in the second half [of the New York City FC game] in the Fresno game, while the guys who started the match will play against San Jose.”
Giovani dos Santos’ form: The El Tri attacker has come under considerable scrutiny since a lackluster 2017 season, and while dos Santos hasn’t been terrible, Gio has yet to make a significant impact this offseason. Hopefully Ola Kamara recovers from a bout of the flu in time for the pair to get more minutes together.
Tomas Hilliard-Arce’s steady rise: Though the No. 2 overall pick was responsible for Fresno’s only tally, the Stanford three-time champion atoned for his earlier mistake by powerfully smashing home a 77th minute corner kick for his second headed goal in as many games.
It might just be preseason, but Hilliard-Arce is a legitimate aerial threat. He’s also going to push Daniel Steres hard for minutes.
