LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo has been named the MLS Player of the Week for his heroic performance in goal vs. the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.
The Panamanian international recorded a league career best ten stops and was busy from start to finish. In the 9th minute, Lamar Neagle glanced a header destined for the net only for Penedo to acrobatically push the ball over the bar, then on the following corner kick, Penedo dived to his right to punch away a Chad Marshall header.
Jaime Penedo quotes
Arguably Penedo's finest save came in the second half with the Galaxy holding onto a slim 1-0 advantage. The dangerous Neagle raced inside the box and cut back to a wide open Andy Rose, but Penedo made an incredible reaction save from point-blank range to deny the Sounders yet again.
Two things stood out about Penedo's barrage of stops.
His range of saves: From 1 on 1s that required Penedo to quickly dart off his line to difficult close range stops and long-distance blasts, Jaime put on quite the clinic for the sold out StubHub Center crowd.
His technique: Positionally perfect all game long, Penedo had nary a bobble, and the few times he gave up a rebound Penedo made sure to push the ball away from the danger zone.
The Galaxy battle Sporting Kansas City at home this Saturday.
(As the MLS website describes, "The MLS player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.")
