Fresh off a comfortable victory over FC Cincinnati, the LA Galaxy have won three straight road matches heading into Saturday’s slug fest at Stanford Stadium (7 PT, Spectrum SportsNet). Buoyed by the playmaking ability of Favio Alvarez, the blue white and gold have grown in confidence despite the heavy Open Cup defeat. (And isn’t Zlatan due for a goal or two?)
Of course, standing in their way are a vastly improved San Jose Earthquakes.
What to watch
Boca v. River, coaching edition. After a miserable opening to the 2019 season, the Quakes squad have bought into manager Matias Almeyda’s man-marking system and are reaping the benefits. San Jose are unbeaten in five, frustrating confused opponents while playing breathtaking soccer at times, including a penchant for clever set pieces.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s group will need to put in a focused effort if they wish to escape with a result.
