Congrats Tuna!

El Tri manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino has named a preliminary 29-man squad ahead of this summer’s Gold Cup and a pair of LA Galaxy midfielders made the list: Jonathan dos Santos and Uriel Antuna were both called up.

Mexico will take on a Josef Martinez led Venezuela side June 5th in a homecoming for the one-time Atlanta United manager before heading to Texas to battle Ecuador on the 9th. Though they are scheduled to check into camp this coming Sunday, the press release mentions players still with their clubs will be integrated in a more flexible manner, so it’s unclear when the two will head to training camp.

It’s no surprise Jona was named, the former Barcelona two-way midfielder has been an instrumental figure here in LA and with El Tri. For Antuna, earning the call up should provide a boost of confidence for a talented youngster who not too long ago was languishing on the bench. Here’s to hoping the 21-year old makes the most of the opportunity.

The Philadelphia Union’s Marco Fabian is also on the preliminary squad to round out the domestic call ups.
