LA Galaxy interested in ex MLS center back Giancarlo Gonzalez?

LA could always use another defender

With the confirmed signing of center back Diego Polenta using TAM funds, you would think the LA Galaxy had exhausted their resources for bringing in defensive reinforcements.

Not so fast according to ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle, who reports the club have shown interest in acquiring ex-Columbus Crew center back Giancarlo Gonzalez. The 6’ 3” defender impressed in a short spell with the Crew before a breakout performance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Costa Rica led to a $5 million transfer to Palermo in Serie A. (Note Schelotto briefly managed the club in 2016) Now struggling with Bologna in the second division, Gonzalez apparently wants out and LA are listening.

Such a move is possible but not probable. The Galaxy are 11th in the allocation order and would need to deal with Toronto to acquire the top spot. LA also require an international slot. Neither come cheap.

That being said, it wouldn’t be surprising if general manager Dennis te Kloese and company had a plan up their sleeve.
