When Zlatan Ibrahimovic promised a big announcement to the English press last week, many in the media (myself included) were led to believe the 35-year-old was ready to make a decision on his future.
The clues were there: After Zlatan posted a farewell message on social media, United let his contract expire before Jose Mourinho signed Romelu Lukaku to a blockbuster deal, presenting him with Ibra’s No. 9 jersey. And when it was revealed Zlatan held a four hour meeting with agent Mino Raiola at a Manchester restaurant, you could be forgiven for thinking Zlatan was on the move.
Well, it’s Monday night in Los Angeles and still no word has emerged on whether Zlatan Ibrahimovic plans to head stateside and join the Galaxy.
United fans across the pond are clinging to snippets of encouragement: An Italian outlet is reporting Ibra has rejected a LA Galaxy move with a desire to continue at Old Trafford, while the Sun claims Zlatan has put his kids back into the youth academy.
Should Galaxy fans be worried? Despite the allure of Champions League football, the reality of a reduced role next season means Ibrahimovic’s time with United is done.
There’s no pressing need for Zlatan to make a decision right away, and it should be noted his agent is a major player in world football. While it is always possible Ibra could be having second thoughts or entertaining a last second bid from a competitor, the odds are most likely the Galaxy and Ibrahimovic have simply not finalized negotiations.
