Well...to quote Ron Burgundy, that escalated quickly.
The LA Galaxy, feeling aggrieved by a pair of dubious fouls on Diego Chara and David Guzman that culminated in the sending off of Jelle Van Damme, released a ridiculous meme earlier today on Twitter.
It was quirky, hillarious, pop culture-y...everything that makes a classic meme. I think. It’s not an exact science.
Anyway, the Portland Timbers were none too pleased with the not-too-subtle dig at their players, quickly fired back, and the war was on.
@LAGalaxy if you can only put fans in 60% of your seats a cute meme is one way to get attention. We have video guys, too. Stay tuned...— Portland Timbers (@TimbersFC) March 13, 2017
Not the finest comeback from the Timbers, but to their credit, LA haven’t come close to selling out their first two home matches. Would like to see this video the Timbers claim to have...
From there, the thread de-evolves into a spirited argument among the Soccer Twitter faithful about attendance figures, saltiness and the fine art of taking a joke.
It was a funny meme. In reality however, the Galaxy are still 0-2.
