Nigel de Jong gets three-match suspension for Nagbe tackle

Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

Dutch midfielder Nigel de Jong has been banned for three matches for his tackle on Darlington Nagbe during the LA Galaxy's 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers on Sunday.

The Disciplinary Committee confirmed the suspension on Friday, adding the tackle was a "clear and equivocal red card and the play was of an egregious and reckless nature."

De Jong will start serving his suspension on Friday when the Galaxy take on the Houston Dynamo. He will also miss games against Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City.

De Jong, who has a long history of controversial tackles on the pitch, will be due to return on May 8 when the Galaxy host the New England Revolution.

As cause of De Jong's tackle, Nagbe suffered an ankle sprain the kept him out of the Timbers' 3-1 defeat to FC Dallas, though the total amount of time he is expected to be out is still to be determined.
