Earlier this week, while speaking at a Soccerex convention in Manchester, MLS commissioner Don Garber was quick to silence any rumors of Stevie G returning to Anfield on loan this coming offseason.
"I don't think so" said Garber to a small gathering. "And I had not heard that was something that was being contemplated. It doesn’t happen as much as it used to. David knows very well that I was really upset with the big hoopla and the massive commitment we made and then David went and played in Milan."
"And people in our country said: ‘What? He plays for two teams? And you are trying to build a sport.' It was a challenge getting people to understand that."
"You then realise if he is playing for the Galaxy and Milan what a great thing that says about your league and that is the unique drama and beauty and idiosyncrasy that exists in football that doesn’t exist when you are playing in the NFL or baseball."
"I don’t believe we are going to see many more off-season loans happening in our league particularly at what I would call the high-level designated players."
"It’s been a couple of years. I don’t remember the last one we have had - Robbie Keane with Villa, Henry with Arsenal... (Landon) Donovan many years ago."
In recent interviews regarding his new autobiography, Steven Gerrard has been somewhat melancholic in saying that he misses playing at Liverpool FC everyday, the intensity of the games, the quality of the players, etc. Whether or not we should read further into this, or if it is just due to the timing of the BPL starting, is an interesting question.
What are your thoughts on players being loaned out during the off-season? is it too much of a risk? does it prove that our player can still play at a world-class level? leave us your thoughts.
