Before the match, longtime Galaxy servant Todd Dunivant was honored with his family in a pre-game ceremony. Meanwhile, Giovani dos Santos returned to the lineup 2 weeks after suffering an right adductor injury on the questionable Seattle surface.
LA began the game brightly. After Robbie Keane was fouled just outside the area, Steven Gerrard smashed the ensuing free kick off the top of the left post.
In the 10th minute, Robbie Keane, Gyasi Zardes and Sebastian Lletget ruthlessly connected inside the box, but the play materialized at the last second, then in the 18th, Giovani dos Santos sent a lofty corner inside the box that Leonardo powered off the crossbar.
Portland's first chance came when Rodney Wallace raced into the box, but Leonardo was there to intercept the cutback and clear the danger.
With Darlington Nagbe dropping back, the Galaxy attack struggled to break down a crowded Timbers defense, but Robbie Keane provided the magic for LA in the 36th minute, dartingg between the Portland center backs before firing a perfect volley that dipped over goalkeeper Adam Kwarsey and nestled into the net.
Right before the half, Portland almost scored when Fanendo Adi got on the end of a Diego Vaeri cross, but his nodded down header bounced high off the ground, just eluding the left corner.
The Timbers began the second half with real vigor. First Rodney Wallace pulled a shot wide, then minutes later Liam Ridgewell located a bouncing ball inside the Galaxy box and shot a wicked volley inches over Donovan Ricketts' crossbar. Moments later, LA were fortunate to keep the lead when Ridgewell rang a header off the Galaxy crossbar.
Then, the Timbers simply found another gear and began an unmerciful onslaught on the Galaxy goal. In the 65th minute, Fanendo Adi found time and space in the Galaxy box to slam a volley into the net, then Adi was tripped by Dan Gargan inside the area and fired a low PK under a outstretched Ricketts to take the lead for the Timbers. Finally Diego Chara perfectly met a smart cutback to strand Ricketts as the Timbers had a shock lead
Jose Villarreal played a tantalizing cross into the area that Robbie Keane skillfully skid off the top of his head past Kwarsey to bring LA within a goal, but just a minute Darlington Nagbe beat Ricketts on the counter-attack and passed into the net to seal the match for the Timbers.
Inexplicably, the Galaxy gave up a fifth shortly before injury time when Maximiliano Urruti timed a perfect run to easily beat Ricketts.
The Galaxy next travel to Sporting Kansas City next Sunday.
