The United States managed to move on to the next round of the World Cup via the goal differential tiebreaker today despite a loss to Germany. The USA and Portugal were almost mirror images in this group, defeating Ghana by 2-1, drawing, and losing to Germany. The Yanks simply had a better result against Germany where Portugal allowed four goals and the US only one.

One of the themes throughout the tournament has been how high profile the sport has become in the US as the national team has improved their performances over the years. In fact this World Cup performance set a new precedent. The President told those at the table that "you get a sense it has captured the popular imagination". Exactly.
