The 'CONCACAF Cup' as it is being billed, between previous Gold Cup winners Mexico and the United States, will take place on October 10th in Los Angeles. On Tuesday, both sides selected their preliminary 35-man roster, which included one or two familiar faces.
Returning from a puzzling omission in last week's friendlies, Giovani Dos Santos will once again don the #10 jersey for 'El Tri'. Gio's inclusion however comes with little surprise as new head coach Ricardo "Tuca" Ferretti had already inquired about his services.
Nevertheless, Dos Santos has a lot to prove given the mixed-reception back in Mexico towards his stateside move to Major League Soccer's LA Galaxy. Many believe he is stunting the growth of his career by not continuing to play in Europe. A good showing against Mexico's northern rival would surely go a long way in silencing his critics.
On the other side of the line, USMNT coach Jurgen Klinsmann has included three LA Galaxy players on his roster: young attacker Gyasi Zardes, defender Omar Gonzalez, and super-sub (and star of #GargsandGordo) Alan Gordon.
Will the familiarity between the players help or hinder them? Is there more pressure on Gio now that he plays in MLS? Is Ferretti on the hot seat? Is Klinsmann calling in the best players possible?
