The LA Galaxy signed Giovani Dos Santos to continue their tradition of dominating MLS. With the arrival of Steven Gerrard and the emergence of Sebastian LLetget, they looked poised to do just that. Dos Santos was brought in to help the Galaxy in another area, their continued outreach to the Latino community. If last night was any indication of their progress, their plan seems right on schedule.
Over 13,000 fans showed up at the StubHub Center on Thursday to see Gio Dos Santos’ first action as a member of the LA Galaxy. Though the referreeing was terrible, the environment in the stands was electric. It was obvious the fans were there for one reason: Gio.
Walking around the concourse it was easy to see that the majority of fans in attendance were Hispanic. In many ways, the Galaxy are already doing well reaching the largest ethnic group in California. Many fans came in Galaxy gear from this and seasons past.
Many others came in the colors of El Tri, the Mexican National Team. Familiar chants could be heard. Cielito Lindo was being sung in the stands. The excitement over having a Mexican natonal team superstar on the Galaxy was palpable.
When Gio was introduced the stadium went nuts. Chants of "Gio! Gio! Gio!" erupted every time he touched the ball. When he scored a few minutes after coming on, the night was complete.
And to top it off, Gio avoided getting CONCACAF’d.
The Galaxy look poised to challenge for the CCL title, dominate MLS, and win the loyalty of thousands of new Latino fans.
With a head start like this, I’d hate to be the second football club in LA.
