A.J. DeLaGarza has returned to the LA Galaxy Saturday following the death of his infant son to Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. He will be available for selection when the LA Galaxy take on the San Jose Earthquakes Sunday at Buck Shaw Stadium.
LA will be glad to see his face, first of course out of love for a friend. On a practical level, the team has been getting thinner and thinner on the back line. DeLaGarza took a week off, but he might be tasked to start on Sunday with so few players current ninety minutes fit and available to play defense.
Not only have his teammates rallied around DeLaGarza, but many teams around the league had demonstrations of support. The MLS Players' Union chose to donate $10,000 from its collected fines this season to the Los Angeles Children's Hospital's Heart Center, a charity the DeLaGarza's set up as they learned of their son's condition.
