Tonight against the Colorado Rapids the LA Galaxy will be without the services of Marcelo Sarvas, who for the last few weeks has been playing a right central midfielder role in the LA Galaxy's diamond. The front runners to replace him are Gyasi Zardes and Robbie Rogers, and which one gets the nod will have an affect on the shape LA takes against Colorado.
Zardes has gotten one start and two substitute appearances this season. He started as a right midfielder, and in his substitute appearances LA reverted to a standard 4-4-2 when Zardes came onto the pitch. In the opener against Salt Lake, Landon Donovan operated on the opposite side of the midfield.
Were the Galaxy to go with Zardes, they could have Stefan Ishizaki as the opposite wide midfielder and keep Landon Donovan up top. That's the only way to keep both Ishizaki and Baggio Husidic on the pitch, and the two of them have been the best two midfielders for LA.
The other option is to do a one to one swap bringing in Robbie Rogers to replace the injured Marcelo Sarvas. He's had his rehab stint and should be ready to go, but his long slate of injuries has him still an unknown. Rogers would bring an option for free kicks, as Donovan has struggled as the free kick taker this season. He'd also allow LA to keep the shape that had them go unbeaten through the month of April.
