LA Galaxy Homegrown players Jose Villarreal and Oscar Sorto have both been called up by Tab Ramos for the United States U-20 team ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. Teams will open the World Cup on June 21st, and all matches will be broadcast on ESPN.
Oscar Sorto is already with the team, having participated in the U-21 Toulon tournament in France. Sixteen of the players on the World Cup roster participated in the tournament. The five players who stayed behind are familiar names to fans, not only Villarreal but DeAndre Yedlin of Seattle and Luis Gil of Real Salt Lake.
The Galaxy will not lose Jose Villarreal until round sixteen, but he'll be out til after round eighteen. That means missing home against Portland Timbers, away at Chivas USA, and away at San Jose Earthquakes.
The Republic of Ireland plays a World Cup Qualifier today against the Faroe Islands, but Robbie Keane will likely stay with the national team through an international friendly in New York on June 11th. That gives him seven days off until the Galaxy host the Portland Timbers.
As such, the only big question at the forward position in the next few weeks for the Galaxy is whether or not to once again have Landon Donovan play up top with one of the young forwards, or going with two young forwards up top to begin.
