Former LA Galaxy right back Sean Franklin is now going to be a member of DC United after the first round of the 2013 MLS Re-Entry Draft held via conference call this afternoon. As he was taken in the first round, United will have to make a bonafide offer to Franklin or simply pick up his option. That's a steep cap hit for Franklin, who is on his second MLS contract.
The selection of Franklin means LA are now officially divorced from two of their four Re-Entry Draft contributions. Pablo Mastroeni elected to retire, but Colin Clark and Laurent Courtois are still available for selection in the second round next week. If they make it through without being selected, LA can renegotiate new deals with them.
It was one of the more active Re-Entry Drafts in recent history, with Franklin going with DC United's first pick and the Portland Timbers trading with Chivas USA to get the second pick. Portland gave up Andrew John-Baptiste and got Jorge Villafana and the second Re-Entry Draft pick which they used to get Steve Zakuani.
The Galaxy passed in the first round of the Re-Entry Draft. Galaxy fans will get an early opportunity to see Franklin again, as DC United visit the StubHub Center in their second match of the 2014 season.
If last year is an indication, today's news make A.J. DeLaGarza the full time right back for the Galaxy next season. Playing next to Omar Gonzalez will likely be one of Leonardo, Kofi Opare, and Tommy Meyer.
