The big news out of today's LA Galaxy reserve match was the presence of Christian Wilhelmsson in the Galaxy reserve squad. The most this can definitively mean is that Wilhelmsson is a trailist with the Galaxy, as trialists are allowed to play with reserve teams. While much of the evidence points toward the Galaxy and Wilhelmsson reaching a deal, nothing has been signed yet.
Wilhelmsson went sixty minutes in the match against San Jose's reserves in San Jose. According to Quake, Rattle, and Roll's Robert Jonas, Wilhemsson was active on the wings but his corner kicks and crosses were sub-par. Which is fine, since the Galaxy have someone fairly decent at corner kicks and crosses.
The active on the wings part is encouraging. It's what Landon Donovan does and why he pairs so well with Robbie Keane. With Donovan and Wilhelmsson the Galaxy could have Keane as the lone striker, Donovan and Wilhelmsson as wingers, and Beckham, Juninho, and Sarvas in the central midfield. Just a thought, Bruce Arena, in case you are reading.
Wilhelmsson also got called offside three times in the first half, but chalk that up to the Swede getting to know the MLS refs for the first time.
The Galaxy ultimately lost the reserve match. Buddle started and was captain, and nearly snuck one in. If he can get himself in shape he's a fine weapon to bring off the bench.
