Landon Donovan, after the match in Columbus was quoted as saying:
"Our focus now is on Wednesday," Donovan said. "Put everything into Wednesday. It's a must-win game, and then a big one against Salt Lake. And we think if we can win that game Saturday, the Supporters' Shield is ours, so this is a big week for us."
Mathematically he's right. The LA Galaxy can clinch the Supporter's Shield with a victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday. They will, however, need a little help from their enemies.
If Real Salt Lake loses to Chicago on Wednesday, then the Galaxy can clinch the Supporter's Shield with a win or a draw and a Seattle loss or draw. Should Real Salt Lake win or draw with Chicago, the Galaxy will have to defeat RSL and Seattle will still have to lose or draw.
So, the only match on the out of town scoreboard the Galaxy need to concern themselves with is Seattle and New England. Should that go the Galaxy's way, Donovan's prediction shall come true. Of course, should the Seattle Sounders defeat the New England Revolution, the Galaxy would still eliminate RSL from the Shield race with a victory.
It'd be nice to wrap things up mathematically on Saturday, allow the Galaxy to rest some starters during the month of October. How would you feel about the Galaxy trotting out of a B-squad for the last home match against Chivas?
