Los Angeles Galaxy Open Up Champions League Play Right, Defeat Motagua

There's not much to criticize the Los Angeles Galaxy for tonight. They opened up Champions League play with a bang, defeating Club Motagua 2-0. Still every game is different, as both tonight's goals came off the run of play. Last match against FC Dallas had three goals all off set pieces.

For the first goal, Juninho got to play field general. He held the ball at the top of the box, and found AJ DeLaGarza making a run to his right. AJ didn't stop, hit a rolling cross past the face of goal. Adam Cristman was following the play, and slid in to knock the cross into goal in the 13'.

The Galaxy weren't done, as after halftime, David Beckham sent in a cross that bounced past the first two men. Landon Donovan controlled it with his chest, then smashed it into the back of the net on a volley. I haven't looked it up, but it's quite likely this is the Galaxy's first match this year where all goals came from the forward position.

Motagua had a player sent off, Ivan Guerrero, for a studs up challenge on Sean Franklin. Franklin was fine, but it took away any momentum Motagua had to try and come back from 2-0. Juninho also had an injury square, after a 50/50 with goalkeeper Donaldo Morales.

Notes:

  • Adam Cristman has now scored in every posible competition. He's scored in MLS, US Open Cup, CONCACAF Champions League, Reserve League, as well as the World Football Challenege.
  • Cristman joins Landon Donovan and Sean Franklin as the only players to score for Los Angeles in Champions League/Cup still with the club.
  • Bruce confirmed the Galaxy are trying to get Robbie Keane for Saturday's match.
  • He also said kind words about Angel leaving, though he could not confirm he's with Chivas now. Chivas is expected to make the announcement tomorrow.
