It was announced this morning my MLS that Mike Magee had been named MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for week 15. Magee earned the honor not for his play on the left side of the midfield, but for playing goalkeeper for 47 minutes and making four saves. His inspiring play under the craziest of circumstances has earned him a twitter meme and a trending topic.
If you haven't heard the story by now, Donovan Ricketts went down with an injury in the 23rd minute after he tried to save some schoolchildren from an oncoming bus. Josh Saunders was red carded in the 43rd minute after allegedly throwing an elbow at Steven Lenhart.
Magee only had to make on save in his first thirty five minutes in goal, but San Jose pushed hard in the final ten minutes forcing Magee to make three critical saves. He even made the save of the day in the 89th minute, diving at Lenhart just as Lenhart struck the ball from inside the 6 yard box. The shot hit Magee and flew out of play.
Magee is the second Galaxy player to win Player of the Week this year. Landon Donovan was given the honor in week 6.
