The LA Galaxy defense was well represented in the latest weekly Castrol Index after keeping two clean sheets last week. Jaime Penedo and his four saves finished first on the weekly index. He was joined in the top ten by his defenders Kofi Opare and Leonardo.
Beyond the saves, the trio combined for fourteen blocks, interceptions, and clearances on Sunday; as well as seven recoveries. Eight more BIC on Wednesday and eleven recoveries for the two defenders and it's clear why everyone would look good on the stat sheet. Even if the offense struggled over those 180 minutes, the defense held their ground against two teams with playoff ambitions.
They were in good company this week, as several zeros in the weekly results column led to eight goalkeepers and seven defenders making the weekly top twenty. Montreal, who came back from their 1-0 loss to the Galaxy with a 2-1 win over Philadelphia had four players in the top twenty.
The overall index has Robbie Keane in fourth overall, with Golden Boot contenders Marco di Vaio and Mike Magge as the top two respectively. Week to week defenders may be recognized, but overall goal scorers are the most rewarded.
