Bruce Arena Positive On Last Night's Galaxy Match

The LA Galaxy played their worst match of September last night, with only one player standing out in the MIR. Still, the month of September was quite positive on the whole, with Marcelo Sarvas and the Galaxy only leaving two points on the table. Given how badly the Galaxy played, yet still managed to get the draw, and in the context of their recent form Bruce Arena was understandably upbeat.

"I thought that it was a fair result," said Bruce Arena. "We didn’t play our best match by any means. I think we could have been a little bit better. Our passing wasn’t good on the night. I think in the second half, our defensive shape was better, which we needed because we fell apart towards the end of the first half. I would have liked to see us, obviously, get the second goal and get out of here with three points."

The Galaxy's passing accuracy was actually a percentage point higher than Colorado's at 78%, with more total passes. However, the quality of that passing wasn't particularly great. The defensive shape falling apart at the end of the first half is understandable given that A.J. DeLaGarza had to be helped to the locker room after he half hour mark, but Arena was up on Tommy Meyer's performance as a whole.

"Tommy did very well," said Arena. "We had to use the game to get David [Beckham] some fitness, some minutes, and the same with Landon [Donovan] coming back. Those are important minutes for those players as we move forward as well."

Much like Omar Gonzalez' return, the Galaxy had to use this match to get Beckham some fitness minutes. Donovan played in a reserve match before coming back mid-September, but it seems he's still getting back to his normal fitness as well. October will have much to with the Galaxy's seeding in the playoffs, but even more-so it will be about getting everyone at top fitness for the playoff run.

"There’s a lot of season left," said Arena. "Obviously, the month of October is going to be important for us. We’re coming around. We’re slowly getting some guys back on the field and getting in better form, but obviously the next three league matches are important."

Next for the Galaxy is a match at home against Real Salt Lake on Saturday, a chance for the Galaxy to pull ahead in the standings again. A win in both their home matches in October would see the Galaxy at 56 points, but there are a whole host of possible scenarios.

Marcelo Sarvas Has Biggest Impact On Draw

The LA Galaxy walked out of Colorado with a point against the Rapids. Moments after Marcelo Sarvas scored the opening goal for the Galaxy, an equalizer was let in and that's how the match finished. Sarvas' goal was unassisted, and unfortunately the rest of the match impact picture is fairly bleak.

Sarvas' rocket in the tenth minute put the Galaxy up 0-1 on the road. Robbie Keane had received a pass, dribbled sloppily in the box then taken a left footed shot that was blocked, and Sarvas was in jus the right position to smash home the rebound with his right foot into the top far corner. Sarvas also earned four fouls, and all that was good for a Match Impact Rating of 78.1.

No one else on the club finished higher than eleven in match impact rating. Juninho finished with a 10.5 and David Beckham finished with a 10.3. Each earned a foul, as did Landon Donovan who finished with a 9.75. They were the only players to earn fouls. Juninho, Magee, Donovan, and Keane all had shots on target.

Magee and Donovan both earned yellow cards. Sarvas committed three fouls and Donovan two. Ultimately it seems Mike Magee and Robbie Keane ultimately had no impact on the match, as Keane finished with a 0.25 rating and Magee with 0.

Magee was Bruce Arena's second substitution, bringing in Edson Buddle, so Arena noticed Magee wasn't having a good match. Unfortunately, Arena had to use his first substitution in the thirty fourth minute after A.J. DeLaGarza left the match with a left knee sprain (early diagnosis). He saved his last substitution to take out Beckham when he felt Beckham was gassed.

If we're looking for who had the biggest impact on the match after Marcelo Sarvas, look no further an A.J. DeLaGarza. The Galaxy had already surrendered the equalizer, but with Tommy Meyer on the backline the Galaxy had to play more defensively as a whole. It also took away a substitution, and that one he ended up making traded replacement level for replacement level.

Edson Buddle doesn't work well with Robbie Keane. When they're up top together it's often occupying the same quadrant, making both players out of position. Bringing Buddle in was more about putting Landon Donovan in the midfield to keep the team from conceding a match winner. Arena then brought in Michael Stephens lest the Galaxy give up an extra time goal.

That means all three substitutions were made with defense in mind, even though Buddle was one of the substitutions. The Galaxy playing defensively on the road is nothing new, and with Real Salt Lake and Seattle coming to The Home Depot Center in October, taking a point on the road isn't the worst thing, regardless of opponent.

AJ DeLaGarza Leaves Match With Left Knee Sprain

The LA Galaxy had to do without one of their best defenders for most of the majority of their match against the Colorado Rapids as A.J. DeLaGarza went out with a left knee sprain in the thirty-seventh minute. He had to be carried to the locker room by the training staff, unable to put pressure on his injured knee. It was a hard tackle that took him out, and he had to be stretchered off the pitch.

The LA Galaxy defense has been much improved since they've been able to get the 2011 defensive line back of DeLaGarza, Gonzalez, Dunivant, and Franklin. Much of the team's resurgence can be tied to that moment. DeLaGarza was replaced in the match by Tommy Meyer who was one of a revolving door of center backs called in to replace Omar Gonzalez earlier in the year.

While the early prognosis is a sprain, the team won't know anything conclusive until he's had an MRI. It'll be a story to watch this upcoming week as the Galaxy prepare to take on Real Salt Lake.

LA Galaxy Matchday Update: Beckham Likely To Go

The LA Galaxy march up to Commerce, Colorado to face the Colorado Rapids in match that can widen the gap between the Galaxy and the Seattle Sounders. Seattle drew nil-nil to Vancouver last night, which means the Rapids can't be mathematically eliminated with a loss, but also means the Galaxy can put three points between themselves and the Sounders; important considering Seattle's match in hand.

"In May, this would have been an unlikely scenario," said manager Bruce Arena after the Galaxy's victory over Toronto, " so it's been a terrific run probably of close to 20 games for our team. The resurgence has been outstanding. It's a real character test on the group, and not many teams would have positioned themselves where we are right now. Having said that, I think there's a lot of soccer to be played this season."

David Beckham practiced all week with the club, and thus is expected to be available for selection tonight. Christian Wilhelmsson however, also listed as questionable for tonight's match, didn't train with the club this week and likely didn't travel with the team.

Quietly, Robbie Keane has put himself in the top five among goals scorers in MLS this year. Last week he scored his 13th and 14th, which currently has him tied with Thierry Henry for fourth. He's scored ten in his last twelve matches including his brace against Toronto FC. Of course, this fourth victory in a row secured the Galaxy's playoff spot.

Almost as quietly Landon Donovan is tied with Graham Zusi for the MLS assists lead with 14 after setting up Keane's second goal. Another sign that the Galaxy are firing on all cylinders, Juninho's brace against Toronto FC game him four goals over his last four matches.

Injury Report Update: Wilhelmsson Joins Beckham

The injury report has been updated, and instead of David Beckham coming off, Christian Wilhelmsson has been added. Beckham continues to rehab through a left ankle injury though he's said he wants to be available for selection on Sunday.

David Beckham Wants To Be Involved Sunday

David Beckham told in a phone interview yesterday that he hopes to be available for Sunday's match against the Colorado Rapids. Beckham still appears on the injury report as questionable, but his progress this week in practice could see him return to action.

"Trying to get my fitness back – I was working on fitness while I was injured, but nothing, obviously, like playing games and being in training. Hopefully, I can get out on the field and stay fit this week and be involved"

Beckham's availability is the big story for the Galaxy this week, but LA has managed without him in the two MLS matches he's missed. The Galaxy defeated the Colorado Rapids 2-0 at The Home Depot Center, and then followed that up with a 4-2 victory over Toronto FC.

Much of that success has to be accredited to Juninho stepping up and dropping deadly strikes from the center midfielder position. Yet, as good as Landon Donovan is at corner kicks and free kicks, Beckham's skill in those situations simply can't be replaced. Still, it's not necessary for Beckham to rush back if he's still not feeling 100% with the October matches much more important than the one Sunday.
