Roger Espinoza of Sporting Kansas City, Mario Martinez of Seattle Sounders, Andy Najar of DC United, and Jerry Bengtson of the New England Revolution moved on to the quarterfinals of the Olympic tournament today as the Honduran Olympic team took second place in Group D. Honduras played to a 0-0 draw with group winners Japan. Tournament favorite Spain did not win a match.
Bengtson scored all three of Honduras' group stage goals, the 25 year old showing what he can do for the Revolution when he returns. Mario Martinez has yet to make an appearance with the Sounders, so his presence won't be missed on Sunday in Seattle.
Mexico won Group B, as both CONCACAF teams in the tournament advanced to the knockout stages. Outside of Tottenham's Giovani Dos Santos, the Mexican team is made up entirely of Mexican league players. They'll face Senegal in the next round, with Honduras matched up with the mighty Brazilian team.
Hosts Great Britain are still in the tournament, taking their group with a win over Uruguay today. They'll take on South Korea in the quarters. The final matchup with feature surprising Egypt taking on Japan.
