I hate the 4-4-2.
I think it limits elite teams, it relies more on cohesion as a unit than on skill. It's hard to play fluidly in a 4-4-2, it's more about absorbing pressure than it is about pressuring the opponent. Especially the way the Galaxy play it a lot of the time. Too often they just go into a shell
When you're a team like the Galaxy, and you have the ability on the field, when compared to your competition level, to destroy opposing teams at will, why play a formation that limits your ability to do so? A 4-4-2 limits their possession game, especially when Buddle is in the game.
Too often they just lob a ball forward and hope Donovan or Keane can run on to it, it's frustrating. It's fine when it's Beckham, but they don't have Beckham anymore.
It's not like they lack the players to run a 4-3-3, a 4-2-1-3, Diamond formation or whatever you want to call it.

Dunivant-------------DeLaGarza------------Gonzalez/Meyer--------Franklin
---------------------Juninho/Stephens-------Sarvas------------------------------
----------------------------------Kaka/Lampard--------------------------------------
Wilhellmsson--------------------Keane--------------Donovan/Magee/Villarreal
That Formation would DESTROY MLS if you ask me. They have the attacking fullbacks necessary to provide width in the attack, they have the holding midfielders that you need to do the dirty work and maintain possession, and most impotantly you have the forwards who can play the modern, more fluid style of play.
It's just my thought, now that they don't have the Beckham buffer, they need to find a way to engage and attract fans, and playing a more fluid, attractive game would be the way to do it. Especially in LA, in LA winning is one thing, but winning while being fun to watch is optimal, the Lakers without showtime aren't the Lakers we know today. that's what I think LA needs to be, Showtime on the pitch.
