Women's World Cup: USA v. Japan, TV Schedule, Prediction, and Game Thread
The Women's World Cup is about an hour away, and after the sadfest that was the Real Madrid friendly, I'm sure Galaxy fans are looking for something to cleanse their pallet.
Kick-off time: 11:45 am pst (8:45 pm local time)
Pregame hype machine begins: 11:00 am
TV: ESPN
Location: Frankfurt, Germany
Who to watch if you haven't been watching: Abby Wambach. Wambach was frustrated through most of the group stages, and at times tried too hard, but she's been the heroine of the knockout stage. She has a nose for being in the right place at the right time on a cross, and has the equalizer and winning goal to her credit for the last two matches against Brazil and France.
Projected Lineup: Wambach will likely be joined up top by Amy Rodriguez, but look for Alex Morgan to come off the bench in the second half to give the team a spark if it's still close (and it likely will be). The rest will be Hope Solo in goal; Krieger, Rampone, Buehler, LePeilbet, O'Reilly, Boxx, Lloyd, Cheney.
Projected finish: Japan has never beaten Uncle Sam's Angels. Today's not the day they start
USA 3 - Japan 2

Go USA! Hope it’s a good game. Japan is easy to root for but I won’t be rooting for ’em today.

Japan is easy to support as is New Orleans. But the Saints didn’t rebuild the levies. I’m gonna bah humbug all over this.

yeah it gets a little bit overly sentimental here
of course so does “the gritty Yanks” story about the US team’s comeback. But hey, the USA’s had its own natural disasters this past year. We could come up with reasons why we need a pick me up too ;-)

Also, re: Rodriguez and the lineup:
GrantWahl
USA’s Megan Rapinoe starting at left midfielder, Lauren Cheney moves to forward. Amy Rodriguez not starting. #WWC

damn it, I predicted part of that, but not Cheney moving to forward. I even though about bumping her there, since that’s her natural spot, but nooooo

The USA better put one of these in. I’ve seen so many games where a team doesn’t put away golden opportunities and end up allowing a goal against the run of play.
that’s the other way these things go. You have so many chances not go in, you start playing lose and you’re vulnerable to counters

From Grant Wahl
GrantWahl: HT USA 0:0 Japan. Japanese overwhelmed at times, but US couldn’t finish. Few set-piece chances for US to utilize height advantage.
He’s right, game has been so clean, US aren’t getting their set pieces.
they're also marking Wambach much tighter than previous opponents have
so she hasn’t had as much of an opp for good header chances. And yeah they are better defending set pieces. But US has just barely missed on at least 2.

You’re never going to make that shot so don’t bother taking it. You might as well punt the ball 50 yards into the stands while you’re at it.
exactly. You can’t have the attitude of, “well I made the run, may as well shoot it”

for a Dodgers analogy
they leave 20 men on base in Game 7 of the WS, finally get a HR by a fictional good pinch-hitter off the bench (since they don’t currently have an Alex Morgan), then 2 errors on the same play let in a Little League-type run. We’re going to extra innings.
