It'll be an LA derby on Tuesday in the US Open Cup, but not the MLS one. The Los Angeles Galaxy will face off against the LA Blues of the USL Pro League Tuesday June 28th at Titan Stadium in Fullerton. This is the third round of the US Open Cup, last year the Galaxy entered the Open Cup in the 4th round.
Israel Sesay, who made appearances with the Galaxy in 2007 and 2008 scored the lone goal on Tuesday that put the Blues through to the next round. Four current LA Blues players have made MLS appearances for the Galaxy. Mike Randolph, Josh Tudela, and Leonard Griffin have all made appearances with the big club, with Mike Randolph leading the way with 39 appearances.
The LA Galaxy have won the US Open Cup twice, in 2001 and 2005. Should the LA Galaxy somehow find a way past the LA Blues, they'd play in the Quarterfinals of the US Open Cup against an undetermined opponent. Discussion questions after the jump.
Questions for discussion:
#1 Can we assume the Galaxy are going to send their reserves to play this game?
#2 Does the US Open Cup mean anything to a team which expects to win the supporter's shield this year?
#3 Does anyone outside of the Seattle Sounders care about the US Open Cup?
