This is something that s different for all MLS fans. This might be because it is unique to MLS. Whereas the team with the most points at the end of the regular season is crowned the champion in most leagues, in MLS it gets you the Supporters Shield. If you want to be league champion though, you need to win MLS Cup.
I think most people will agree that MLS Cup is a bigger deal than the Supporters Shield. When it comes to MLS, holding up that silver soccer ball trophy is the ultimate achievement, but there is a lot to be said for winning the Supporters Shield.
First of all, winning the Supporters Shield is a better indicator that you are the best team in the league. Finishing first after an entire season is harder than getting hot for a month. Additionally, winning the Supporters Shield guarantees a spot in the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League (who was the last MLS team to win a CONCACAF title anyways...). Having an extra trophy is never a bad thing either.
The question of how important the Supporters Shield is especially relevant to Galaxy fans right now. We won it a year ago, but got knocked out in the Western Conference Finals. Because of it we have an extra trophy for the trophy case though and will be in the group stage of this year's CCL. We're also leading the league right now, putting us in great position to grab the Supporters Shield for the second consecutive year.
So with all that said, how much do you care about the Supporters Shield. Is a year in which the Galaxy win in, but fall short in the playoffs like last year a disappointment? Do you look at any year in which the Galaxy win it a successful season because we proved it over an entire season and added a trophy to the trophy case? Are you somewhat conflicted or a have completely different opinion on it?
