LA Galaxy Reveal Protected Player List
Ahead of Wednesday's expansion draft, the Los Angeles Galaxy have released their protected player list. Let's take a look, and then analyze below:
David Beckham; A.J. DeLaGarza; Landon Donovan; Todd Dunivant; Sean Franklin; Omar Gonzalez; Robbie Keane; Mike Magee; Juninho; Donovan Ricketts; Josh Saunders; Jack McBean (Homegrown Player)
Surprises? I predicted in the SBNation Soccer mock draft that Chad Barrett would be protected, as he was key down the stretch. Alas, no Barrett. In fact, it seems Bruce Arena has chosen to go with 2 goalkeepers, four defenders, four midfielders, and one forward.
If he didn't feel the need to protect two forwards, Arena could have go with Cardozo or Lopez. Yet it seems the Galaxy would rather hold onto two starter quality goalkeepers. I think this means a trade is imminent. Which to be fair, is the proper way to get value out of Ricketts.
The complete list of available players:
Sean Alvarado, Chad Barrett, Chris Birchall, Paolo Cardozo, Adam Cristman, Leonardo, Frankie Hejduk, Hector Jimenez, Bryan Jordan, Daniel Keat, Miguel Lopez, Dustin McCarty, Brian Perk, Dasan Robinson, Michael Stephens, Ryan Thomas
At lot of young talent there. I didn't protect Paolo Cardozo either in my mock list, and he was the first to go in the SBNation mock expansion draft. The good thing to note is that the Galaxy essentially protected their ideal Starting XI minus a forward. The Galaxy do have Jack McBean, but he's only 16.

It's been noted on the twitter
that Jovan Kirovski is not on either list. Whether this is an oversight or something else is not yet known
I'm surprised
Beckham is on the protected list.
since he hasn’t given any indication, have to act like he’s coming back until he’s not

True
but haven’t they put him on the unprotected list before.. simply because no one will pick up his paycheck? Maybe they have a feeling someone actually will this time…

you mean the protected list?
Beckham was protected in 2010, 2009, 2008, and 2007. I’lll check my math, but I think that’s every year : )

I was surprised with the two goalkeepers
Ricketts likely to leave in trade!

yeah, that’s what we’re thinking. Ricketts was always solid, but Saunders has won the fans hearts and has performed just as well if not better. NY needs a keeper : )

Josh Saunders
Best keeper in the world for <$60K! Damn right!
Come on, two good MLS keepers on the squad for less than one mid level manager at AEG makes, its a no brainer, there doesn’t need to be a trade for that to make sense. Especially, this is the MLS remember, where keepers can get mauled on a daily basis.
Josh Saunders and his unorthodox, never catch the ball, style, not quite good enough to play in the English Premier League, but good enough to be England’s National keeper!
